Clearing Space and Inviting Flow: Mindful Questions to Ask When Decluttering Your Home

Our homes are a reflection of our inner world. The objects we keep, the way we arrange them, and the energy they carry all influence our well-being. When we hold onto things that no longer serve us, we create stagnation—both physically and emotionally. Decluttering isn't just about getting rid of excess; it's about making space for new energy, new opportunities, and a home that fully supports us.

For some, getting rid of excess is an easy task but for others, the activity can prove to be daunting. Even as an individual who thrives on clearly clutter, I can often be in question of how to handle specific items. Below are six essential questions to ask yourself that can hopefully assist you in deciding what stays and what goes.

Does this item bring me joy?

Every object in our home holds energy. Some items radiate warmth, nostalgia, or inspiration, while others feel heavy or burdensome. Pick up an object and notice how it makes you feel. Does it bring a spark of happiness? If not, its presence may be weighing you down.

Is it functional?

Practicality is just as important as beauty. Ask yourself: Do I actually use this? If an item serves no real purpose and simply takes up space, it might be time to let it go. A home filled with useful, intentional belongings allows energy to move freely rather than being blocked by unnecessary clutter.

Does it have sentimental value that can be preserved in another way?

Sentimental objects can be the hardest to part with. If something holds deep meaning, consider how you can honor it without keeping the physical item. Could you take a photo of it? Repurpose it? Pass it on to someone who will cherish it? Memories live in us, not in objects.

Is it damaged or broken?

Broken items hold stagnant energy. When we keep things that no longer function, we symbolically invite stagnation into our lives. If it can’t be repaired or repurposed, releasing it clears space for new, functioning items to enter your life.

Does it represent a past chapter in my life that I’m ready to close?

Our belongings are often tied to past versions of ourselves. Clothes from an old job, gifts from a past relationship, or items associated with a different phase of life may no longer align with who you are today. Keeping them may unconsciously hold you back. Letting go allows you to step fully into your present and future self.

Is it creating clutter and obstructing energy flow in my space?

Feng Shui teaches that clutter blocks the natural flow of chi (life force energy). If a space feels cramped, overwhelming, or chaotic, it’s a sign that too much is accumulating. Clearing out excess allows for fresh energy, clarity, and a renewed sense of calm in your home.

Happy Purging!
